Hearing Aid Styles

There are many styles of hearing aids. The degree of the hearing loss, power and options requirements, manual dexterity abilities, cost factors, and cosmetic concerns are some of the factors that will determine the style the patient will use. The most common styles are listed below:

RITE: Receiver in the Ear units typically use tiny casing and nearly invisible wires connecting the transmitter (receiver) into the ear canal. RITE fittings offer a cosmetically apppealing option. They are lightweight and tiny, with a transparent dome that makes them less noticeable than aids with custom earmolds. Although this style can be fit on many hearing losses, it works best on a High Frequency hearing loss. Most of these models use the size 10 or 312 batteries.

ITC: In-The-Canal and  ITE: In-The-Ear custom made to fit your individual ear require good dexterity to control the volume wheels and other controls. Typically used for nearly all hearing losses, it is easy to insert, descreet and comfortable. The ITC/ITC uses all sizes of batteries, 10, 312 & 13, depending on the size and shape of your ear canal.

CIC or IIC: Completely-In-the-Canal/Invisible in the Canal custom made hearing instruments are the tiniest hearing aids made. Due to their small size and the fact that they fit so deeply into the canal, they are the most descreet of all the hearing instruments. Typically they do not have manual controls attached to them because they are so small, however many now offer a remote control capability. The CIC/IIC hearing instrument utilizes the smallest hearing aid battery, the size 10.

BTE: Behind-The-Ear hearing instruments are the largest style and they are very durable and reliable. BTEs have the most circuit options and they can typically have much more power than any of the custom made in the ear units. They sit on the back of your ear and are connected to the ear canal via custom-made plastic tubing and earmold.  The earmold is custom made from an ear impression to perfectly replicate the size and shape of your ear. This style typically has a size 13 or 675 battery for the longest battery life of all the models.
